DaVinci Roofscapes Reviewed: Are Synthetic Slate Tiles Worth It in Minnesota?

50

year limited warranty

DaVinci Multi-Width Slate has the longest field track record of any synthetic slate brand — 20+ years of installs in Minnesota freeze-thaw conditions.

Twin Cities luxury homeowners considering DaVinci Roofscapes ask three questions: Does it actually look like real slate? Does it perform in Minnesota cold? Is it worth 2–3× the cost of premium asphalt?

Short answers: yes (from any reasonable viewing distance), yes (engineered to -40°F, real-world Minnesota track record since 2002), and depends on architecture (yes for Tudor/Victorian/French Country, sometimes no for Colonial/transitional).

I am Noah Bergland, co-owner of Owl Roofing in Shoreview. We install DaVinci Roofscapes across the Twin Cities luxury market. Below is the honest review based on field experience, not manufacturer marketing.

TL;DR — DaVinci Roofscapes review

Bottom line: DaVinci is the category leader in synthetic slate for good reasons — 20+ year Minnesota track record, ColorVue color matching, six tile widths for authentic slate appearance, 50-year limited warranty, Class 4 impact rated, Class A fire rated. Worth the $15–$22/sq ft installed cost for Tudor, Victorian, French Country, and English Country homes where slate aesthetic is critical. Less worth the upcharge on Colonial or transitional homes where Class 4 asphalt at half the cost can deliver similar functional performance.

The DaVinci product line

DaVinci Multi-Width Slate. Six tile widths (6″-12″) replicating natural slate variation. Most authentic slate-look in the synthetic category.

DaVinci Bellaforte Slate. Single-width slate-profile tile with interlocking installation. Easier to install, slightly less authentic appearance than Multi-Width.

DaVinci Bellaforte Shake. Single-width shake-profile tile, designed to replace cedar shake aesthetic. Most common North Oaks and Wayzata cedar-shake replacement.

DaVinci Single-Width Slate. Single-width slate tile. Cleaner, more uniform aesthetic preferred on modern transitional architecture.

Real-world Minnesota performance

DaVinci installs date to the early 2000s in Minnesota. The 20+ year track record is the longest of any synthetic slate brand. Twin Cities installs from 2003–2005 are still performing without significant degradation, suggesting the 50-year warranty is conservative.

The polymer formulation is engineered for cold-temperature performance to -40°F. In real Minnesota installs, no documented mass failures from cold-climate exposure.

The ColorVue advantage

DaVinci ColorVue is the custom color-matching system. For Twin Cities homes integrating with stone, copper, or other architectural details, ColorVue allows the slate color to be calibrated to match the rest of the material palette.

The economic value: a North Oaks Tudor with stone foundation and copper accents reads as architecturally complete when the roof color is custom-matched. The standard color blends from competitors do not deliver the same integration depth.

Pros and cons from a Minnesota installer perspective

Pros: Longest field track record. ColorVue color matching. Six tile widths for authentic slate. 50-year warranty. Class 4 impact + Class A fire. Class 4 insurance discount qualified. Cold-temperature engineered. Composite polymer does not crack like natural slate.

Cons: $15–$22/sq ft installed (premium pricing). Heavier than Brava (~370 vs 225 lbs/square) — older homes may need structural review. Material lead times 4–8 weeks. Specialized installer training required for proper hip-and-ridge work.

“We had a great experience working with Noah Bergland on replacing the roof of our North Oaks home. From start to finish, the process was smooth and professional.”

Frequently asked questions

Is DaVinci synthetic slate worth the cost in Minnesota?

For Tudor, Victorian, French Country, English Country homes — yes. The architectural fit and 50-year service life justify the $15–$22/sq ft cost. For Colonial or transitional architecture — Class 4 asphalt at half the cost is often the smarter economic choice.

How much does DaVinci cost installed in the Twin Cities?

$15–$22 per square foot installed for Multi-Width Slate. Bellaforte Slate or Shake $13–$19/sq ft. On a 5,000 sq ft luxury home, $65,000–$110,000 all-in.

Does DaVinci look like real slate from the street?

Yes. DaVinci Multi-Width with six tile widths is indistinguishable from natural slate at any reasonable viewing distance. Bellaforte Slate is also convincing.

How does DaVinci hold up in Minnesota winters?

Engineered for -40°F cold-temperature performance. 20+ year Minnesota field installs show no significant cold-climate failures. The polymer composite stays flexible where natural slate would crack.

Is DaVinci Class 4 impact rated?

Yes. UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating qualifies for 10–30% premium discounts with major Minnesota insurance carriers.
