Best Roof Shingles 2026: A Category-by-Category Breakdown

There’s no single “best” shingle — there’s a best shingle for your roof, your budget, and what you’re trying to survive. For most Twin Cities homeowners, GAF Timberline HDZ is the best overall shingle — it’s the best-selling architectural shingle in the country for a reason, and we’ve installed more of it than anything else. But if hail is your main worry, you want a Class 4 impact-rated shingle instead. If you’re trying to hit a number, there’s a better value pick. We lay out all six below, with the specific product line, the real specs, and the honest tradeoffs — no “editor’s choice” fluff.

We install GAF, CertainTeed, Malarkey, IKO, and Atlas lines on Twin Cities roofs every year, so this isn’t theoretical — it’s based on what holds up through Minnesota winters, hailstorms, and 90-degree August roof decks.

How We Ranked These

We didn’t run a lab test. We ranked these the way a roofer actually evaluates a shingle: install experience (how it lays, how it seals, how it holds up on a ladder in July), impact and wind rating pulled straight from the manufacturer’s current spec sheet, warranty terms as written (not as marketed), availability through our distributors, and cost tier relative to the rest of the lineup. Every spec in this article came from a manufacturer spec sheet or product page pulled this month — see the Sources table at the bottom.

One disclosure up front: Owl Roofing installs most of the lines on this list — GAF, CertainTeed, Malarkey, and Atlas are all shingles we carry. We’re not pretending to be a neutral lab. We are telling you, honestly, which ones we’d put on our own house, and which ones we install because a customer asked for them even though we’d steer a friend elsewhere.

Best Overall: GAF Timberline HDZ

GAF Timberline HDZ is the best-selling shingle in America, and it earns that spot on installability and consistency more than on any single spec being the best in class.

  • Impact rating: UL 2218 Class 3
  • Wind rating: ASTM D3161 Class F, ASTM D7158 Class H; WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty offers no maximum wind speed when installed with four qualifying GAF accessories (otherwise standard coverage applies)
  • Warranty: Lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects (for the original or an eligible second owner of a single-family home); 25-year StainGuard Plus™ algae warranty
  • Cost tier: Mid-range

Honest drawback: HDZ’s standard impact rating is Class 3, not Class 4 — in a hail-heavy year, that matters. If hail is your top concern, skip to the Class 4 section below. It’s also a crowded product: because it’s installed on so many roofs, bargain-basement crews use it too, so the shingle’s reputation gets dragged down by bad installs that have nothing to do with the material.

Runner-up: CertainTeed Landmark. Comparable mid-tier architectural shingle with a similarly broad color lineup and a Lifetime limited transferable warranty plus 10-year SureStart protection. Wind resistance is rated to 110 mph with standard installation, 130 mph with CertainTeed’s specified installation method.

Best Value: Malarkey Highlander NEX

“Value” isn’t the cheapest shingle — it’s the best performance per dollar. Malarkey’s Highlander NEX gets there with a Limited Lifetime Warranty and a wind package that beats a lot of shingles priced above it.

  • Wind rating: ASTM D3161 Class F, ASTM D7158 Class H; Limited Wind Warranty to 110 mph, Enhanced Wind Warranty to 130 mph when installed with other qualifying Malarkey products
  • Warranty: Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • Cost tier: Mid-range, priced competitively against entry-level architectural shingles

Honest drawback: Malarkey’s technical data sheet for Highlander NEX doesn’t publish a UL 2218 impact class — if Class 4 hail resistance is non-negotiable for you, step up to Malarkey’s Vista line instead, which does carry a Class 4 rating.

Runner-up: IKO Dynasty. Class 3 impact rating, a 130 mph Limited Wind Warranty, Limited Lifetime coverage, plus 15 years of Iron Clad Protection and a 10-year algae warranty — a genuinely strong value shingle, which is also why it shows up again in Best Budget below.

Best Class 4 (Impact): GAF Timberline UHDZ

If you’ve been hit by hail more than once, this is the category that actually protects your wallet. UL 2218 Class 4 is the highest impact rating that exists for asphalt shingles — a 2-inch steel ball dropped on the shingle twice in the same spot with no fracture. GAF’s Timberline UHDZ is the newest and, in our install experience, the best-performing Class 4 line we put down.

  • Impact rating: UL 2218 Class 4 (highest possible)
  • Wind rating: ASTM D3161 Class F, ASTM D7158 Class H; 15-year WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty with no maximum wind speed when installed with four qualifying GAF accessories
  • Warranty: Lifetime Limited Warranty; 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO™ algae warranty (10% more algae-fighting technology than standard StainGuard Plus)
  • Cost tier: Premium
  • Colors: Weathered Wood, Charcoal, Pewter Gray, Barkwood, Slate, Shakewood — one collection, with GAF’s thicker “Dual Shadow Line” profile

Honest drawback: GAF states plainly that UHDZ is “not warranted against hail damage” despite carrying the Class 4 rating — the rating measures impact resistance for insurance-discount purposes, it is not a guarantee the shingle won’t crack in a severe enough storm. Class 4 also costs more, and some insurers in Minnesota don’t yet offer a premium discount for it, so check with your carrier before assuming the upgrade pays for itself.

Runner-up: Owens Corning Duration FLEX. Also UL 2218 Class 4, with a 130 mph wind warranty (drops to 110 mph if ProEdge FLEX Hip & Ridge isn’t hand-sealed), SureNail Technology for a reinforced nailing zone, and a Limited Lifetime warranty.

Best for Cold Climates: CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex

Minnesota’s real shingle enemy isn’t wind or hail — it’s the freeze-thaw cycle. A shingle that goes brittle at -10°F in January and then bakes at 90°F in August is a shingle that cracks at the tab lines within a decade. CertainTeed built Landmark ClimateFlex around that exact problem.

  • Impact rating: UL 2218 Class 4
  • Fire rating: UL Class A
  • Wind rating: 15-year, 110 mph wind-resistance warranty; 160 mph wind warranty upgrade available
  • Warranty: Lifetime limited transferable warranty (residential); 50-year limited transferable warranty (group-owned/commercial); 25-year StreakFighter algae-resistance warranty; 10-year SureStart protection
  • Cost tier: Premium
  • Feature note: NailTrak extra-wide nailing area, which also makes it a more forgiving install in cold weather when crews are racing daylight

Honest drawback: CertainTeed’s own ClimateFlex product page lists only a handful of colors in its marketing materials — full regional color availability is spottier than GAF’s HDZ lineup, so confirm your color is actually stocked by a Twin Cities distributor before you fall in love with a sample chip.

Runner-up: Malarkey Vista. Malarkey has built its brand around rubberized, polymer-modified asphalt specifically for weather extremes. Vista carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, ASTM D3161 Class F / D7158 Class H wind ratings, a 110 mph Limited Wind Warranty (130 mph Enhanced with other Malarkey products), and a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Best Designer/Luxury: GAF Grand Sequoia AS

If you want a shingle roof that reads like cedar shake from the curb, Grand Sequoia AS is the line we reach for. It’s a thicker-profile, deeper-shadow shingle built to mimic hand-split shake.

  • Impact rating: UL 2218 Class 4 (highest rating)
  • Wind rating: ASTM D7158 Class H, ASTM D3161 Class F; up to 130 mph coverage with special installation (6 nails per shingle plus GAF Starter Strip at eaves and rakes), 110 mph with standard installation
  • Warranty: Lifetime limited transferable warranty with Smart Choice® Protection, including non-prorated material and installation labor coverage for the first 10 years; requires at least three qualifying GAF accessories for lifetime coverage on shingles and accessories; 25-year StainGuard Plus algae warranty
  • Cost tier: Luxury

Honest drawback: GAF’s own spec page states Grand Sequoia AS is “not warranted to withstand hail damage” — same caveat as UHDZ. It’s also a heavier, thicker shingle, which means a slower, more labor-intensive install; expect your labor line item to be higher than a standard HDZ tear-off and reroof.

Runner-up: CertainTeed Presidential Shake. UL 2218 Class 3 impact rating, designed to withstand winds up to 110 mph (130 mph wind warranty upgrade available), Lifetime limited transferable warranty, 30-year StreakFighter algae warranty where available, UL Class A fire rating. The most convincing wood-shake simulation in CertainTeed’s lineup.

Best Budget: IKO Dynasty

“Budget” doesn’t mean “skip the warranty.” IKO Dynasty gets you a real Class 3 impact rating and a genuinely long wind warranty at the lowest price point on this list.

  • Impact rating: UL 2218 / FM 4473 Class 3
  • Wind rating: ASTM D3161 Class F, ASTM D7158 Class H; 130 mph Limited Wind Warranty
  • Warranty: Limited Lifetime warranty (runs from completion of installation for as long as the owner owns the building); 15-year Iron Clad Protection; 10-year Limited Algae Resistance Warranty
  • Cost tier: Budget
  • Colors: 14, including Olde Style Weatherwood, Granite Black, Summit Grey, and Driftshake

Honest drawback: IKO explicitly states the Class 3 impact rating exists to help homeowners qualify for insurance premium reductions — it’s “not a guarantee,” and hail damage isn’t covered under the limited warranty regardless of rating. Budget shingles also tend to have thinner mats, which shows up as granule loss sooner on south- and west-facing slopes that take the most UV.

Runner-up: Atlas Pinnacle Pristine. 19 colors across the Pristine and Natural Expressions collections, a Lifetime Limited Warranty, a 130 mph Wind Limited Warranty, and a Lifetime Algae Resistance warranty (which requires installing Atlas Pro-Cut Hip & Ridge shingles with Scotchgard Protector alongside it).

A note on synthetics: if you want the look of slate or cedar with zero asphalt at all, composite shingles like DaVinci or Brava are worth a look — they’re not asphalt, they’re engineered polymer, and they run well above every line on this list in cost. We don’t install them regularly enough to give them a fair shake in this comparison, but they’re a legitimate option for a true luxury or historic-restoration project.

What “Best” Changes in Hail Country

Minnesota sits inside one of the more active hail corridors in the country, and the Twin Cities metro takes a direct hit most years. If you’ve filed a hail claim in the last five years, “best” stops meaning “nicest color” and starts meaning “Class 4.” A UL 2218 Class 4 rating means the shingle survived a 2-inch steel ball dropped twice on the same spot without fracturing — that’s a genuinely higher bar than Class 3, and it’s the difference between a roof that needs a full reroof after a moderate hailstorm and one that doesn’t.

Two things to know before you chase a Class 4 shingle: 1. No manufacturer warranties against hail damage, Class 4 included. The rating affects whether the shingle cracks, not whether your insurer pays if it does. 2. Insurance discounts for Class 4 vary by carrier and aren’t universal in Minnesota. Ask your agent directly whether your specific policy offers a premium reduction for IBHS-rated or Class 4 shingles before you pay the upgrade price assuming it pays for itself.

Warranty Fine Print: What Changes When Owl Installs These Lines

Every manufacturer on this list sells two tiers of warranty: the standard material warranty that comes with the shingle regardless of who installs it, and an enhanced or extended warranty that adds workmanship coverage or longer terms — but only through a contractor holding that manufacturer’s top-tier certification.

  • GAF’s Golden Pledge (30-year workmanship coverage) requires a GAF Master Elite certified contractor.
  • Owens Corning’s Platinum/Preferred Protection tiers require an OC Preferred or Platinum Contractor.
  • CertainTeed’s 5-Star warranty requires a SELECT ShingleMaster.

Owl Roofing is GAF Certified and a Brava Preferred Contractor, but not GAF Master Elite. That means when we install any of these product lines, your customer gets the manufacturer’s standard limited warranty exactly as listed in the tables above — the Lifetime Limited Warranty on materials, the stated algae and wind coverage — plus Owl’s own 10-year workmanship warranty, which covers our installation separately from GAF’s or CertainTeed’s material coverage. You are not getting locked out of coverage; you’re getting the standard-tier manufacturer warranty plus our own labor warranty, not the manufacturer’s extended workmanship tier that requires a specific certification badge we don’t hold. If an extended manufacturer workmanship warranty specifically is non-negotiable for you, ask us directly before you sign — we’ll tell you straight whether that’s on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best roofing shingle for 2026? There isn’t one universal best — it depends on your priority. GAF Timberline HDZ is the best overall pick for most homeowners because of its proven track record, broad color selection, and mid-range price. If hail resistance is your top priority, a Class 4 line like GAF Timberline UHDZ is the better call.

What’s the difference between a Class 3 and Class 4 impact-rated shingle? Both ratings come from UL 2218, which tests how a shingle holds up to a steel ball dropped from height to simulate hail. Class 4 is the highest rating and means the shingle resisted a 2-inch steel ball dropped twice on the same spot without fracturing. Class 3 uses a smaller ball and is a lower bar. Neither rating is a hail damage guarantee from the manufacturer.

Are Class 4 shingles worth the extra cost in Minnesota? If you’ve had hail damage before or live in a known hail corridor, yes — they hold up better in moderate hailstorms and may qualify for an insurance discount, though that discount depends entirely on your carrier. If you’ve never filed a hail claim, the upgrade is a judgment call, not a necessity.

Which shingle brand lasts longest in Minnesota winters? Any Class 4 or ClimateFlex-type line with rubberized or polymer-modified asphalt handles our freeze-thaw cycling better than a basic 3-tab shingle. CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex and Malarkey Vista are both built specifically around temperature extremes.

Does Owl Roofing install every shingle on this list? We regularly install GAF, CertainTeed, Malarkey, and Atlas lines. We are GAF Certified and a Brava Preferred Contractor, but not GAF Master Elite, so manufacturer-extended workmanship warranties tied to those certifications aren’t available through us — you still get the full standard manufacturer material warranty plus our own 10-year workmanship warranty.

What’s the cheapest shingle that still has a real warranty? IKO Dynasty is the strongest budget pick on this list — a genuine Class 3 impact rating, a 130 mph wind warranty, and a Limited Lifetime warranty, all at the lowest price tier here.
