How Attic Ventilation Is Calculated (The 1/300 Rule)

Building code sizes attic ventilation with a simple ratio: 1 square foot of net free vent area (NFA) for every 300 square feet of attic floor, provided the vents are balanced between intake and exhaust and a vapor barrier sits below the insulation. Without those conditions the requirement doubles to 1/150. The calculator converts your attic’s square footage into total NFA in square inches, splits it between soffit intake and ridge exhaust, and translates the abstract numbers into real hardware — how many standard soffit vents and how many feet of ridge vent.

NFA matters because vents are not all opening: screens, louvers, and baffles block part of every vent, so a 8×16 soffit vent (128 sq in of face) typically delivers only ~56 sq in of actual airflow. Always size from the NFA stamped on the product, not the hole it fills.

Why Balanced Intake and Exhaust Matters More Than Total

Airflow through an attic works like a chimney: cool air enters low at the soffits, warms, and exits high at the ridge. That only works if intake at least equals exhaust. An attic with a generous ridge vent but blocked soffits does not just underperform — the ridge vent can reverse and pull air from the wrong places, including conditioned air from the house or snow in a blizzard. If your numbers cannot be perfectly balanced, err on the side of more intake. And check that insulation has not slumped over the soffit vents; it is the most common ventilation defect we find on Twin Cities inspections.

Ridge Vents vs. Box Vents vs. Powered Fans

Continuous ridge vent is the gold standard for exhaust — it works along the entire peak, has no moving parts, and disappears visually. Box vents (turtle vents) work fine in multiples but concentrate exhaust in spots. Powered attic fans are usually the wrong answer in our climate: they can depressurize the attic and pull conditioned air (and moisture) up through ceiling leaks, making winter frost worse. Poor Ventilation Is a Minnesota Roof Killer

An under-vented attic runs hot and moist. In summer that cooks shingles from below, shortening their life. In winter it is worse: warm attic air melts the underside of the snowpack, meltwater runs to the cold eave and refreezes — and you have an ice dam prying at your shingles and pushing water into your walls. Frost on the roof deck nails in January is the telltale. Ventilation, insulation depth, and air sealing together are the actual cure for ice dams — heat cables are a bandage.

What Minnesota Code (R806) Actually Requires

Beyond the 1/150 baseline and 1/300 exception, code requires vent openings protected against rain and snow, a minimum 1″ air space above insulation at the eaves (that is what baffles are for), and at least 40% — but not more than 50% — of the vent area located in the upper portion of the attic. How much ventilation does a 2,000 sq ft attic need?

Under 1/300: about 960 sq in of NFA — roughly 480 sq in intake (9 standard soffit vents) and 480 sq in exhaust (27 ft of ridge vent).

Can a roof have too much ventilation?

Too much exhaust relative to intake, yes — it unbalances the system. Extra intake is harmless.

Do gable vents count toward the requirement?

Yes, but mixing gable vents with ridge vents can short-circuit airflow. Pick one exhaust strategy.

How do I know if my soffit vents are blocked?

From the attic on a bright day, you should see light at the eaves. No light, or insulation packed to the roof deck, means blocked intake.

Does a bathroom fan vent count as attic ventilation?

No — bath fans must duct fully outside. Venting one into the attic pumps moisture exactly where you do not want it.
