3 Best Shingles Colors for 2026 (+ 1 to Avoid)

When homeowners ask me what shingle color is “right,” what they’re really asking is something deeper:
“What choice will I feel good about every time I pull into my driveway?”
At Owl Roofing, we don’t rush that decision. Color matters more than most people realize—it affects curb appeal, resale value, and how calm or confident you feel about your home for the next 25–40 years.
So today, I want to walk you through the most popular shingle colors for 2026, based on what we’re actually installing across the Twin Cities—not trends dreamed up in a boardroom.
For reference, I’ll be using examples from GAF, the largest shingle manufacturer in the United States. While there are many quality brands out there, GAF’s color data and on-home performance give us a solid benchmark.
1. Charcoal (Black): The Clear #1 Choice for 2026
Charcoal is the most popular shingle color we install—by a wide margin.
Roughly 40–45% of the roofs I personally install are some version of charcoal or black. That’s not by accident.
Charcoal shingles have depth. You’ll notice subtle lighter grays mixed into deep black tones, which creates a high-definition, architectural look instead of a flat, lifeless surface.
This is:
- The shingle I put on my mom’s house
- The shingle I’ll put on my own house
- The color I’ve never had a homeowner regret
Why? Because it works with almost every siding color:
- White
- Cream
- Gray
- Blue
- Tan
- Brick
- Natural wood tones
I’ve yet to see a home where charcoal wasn’t at least a top-two option.

2. Pewter Gray: Lighter, Softer, Still Timeless
Pewter Gray is essentially charcoal’s lighter sibling.
It features:
- More visible gray tones
- Subtle black accents
- A softer contrast overall
This color is incredibly flexible and works beautifully with:
- Beiges
- Browns
- Creams
- Cool neutrals
But where Pewter Gray really shines is with blue siding.
When homeowners do a deep blue or slate blue exterior paired with Pewter Gray shingles, the contrast is stunning. Some of our favorite projects—and best-performing social media posts—come from this exact combination.

3. Hunter Green: Beautiful, but Very Specific
I’ll be honest here.
I’ve never recommended Hunter Green to a homeowner—and I don’t even carry it in my truck.
Not because it’s a bad color. It’s not.
It’s just extremely specific.
Hunter Green works if:
- You’re restoring a historic or colonial-style home
- You have a log cabin or wooded property
- You’re replacing an existing green roof
What I’ve never seen is someone go from a neutral roof to green and feel confident long-term.
For most homeowners, green limits flexibility—and flexibility is peace of mind.

4. Weathered Wood: The Safest Neutral Choice
If charcoal is bold confidence, Weathered Wood is quiet safety.
This color blends:
- Beiges
- Browns
- Soft earthy tones
It’s one of the most forgiving shingles available and works especially well if:
- You’re only replacing the roof (not siding)
- You want minimal contrast
- Your home already leans warm or neutral
We install Weathered Wood every year, consistently, because it simply works. It doesn’t shout—but it also doesn’t age poorly.

Seeing It on Your Home Changes Everything
Choosing a shingle color shouldn’t feel like a gamble.
At Owl Roofing, we use Hover 3D visualization tools to show you your actual home with different shingle options before we ever schedule production.
This removes:
- Guesswork
- Anxiety
- “I hope I picked right” feelings
Instead, homeowners move forward calm, confident, and certain.
